Taking a Taxi at the International Airport at San Juan
Collect your Luggage
Once you collect your luggage, you will directly exit the Terminal Building (often the airline
attendant checks that your luggage claim stubs match those on your luggage). Be sure to
have your luggage claim stubs ready before you leave the luggage area.
Phone Vilma
When you are outside the terminal building, enjoy the warm air and the tropical humidity
and go over to the pay phones to the left hand side of against the wall of the Terminal
Building to phone Vilma Bordas' cell phone, (787) 307-5439 to let her know that you
arrived and are about to take a taxi to the Apartment building.
Tourism Tax Voucher
Now go toward the roadside curb and look for a stand where a person will be standing
issuing 'Tourism Tax Vouchers' to people wishing to take a Taxi. The person will ask you
where you are going, to which you say, "The Marriott Hotel in Condado" and the person
will ask how many people and how much luggage do you have. The Voucher protects you
from possible fraudulent charges as the amount of money you are to pay the Taxi Driver is
written on it. As of April 2007, it costs approximately $15.50-$17.50 depending upon how
much luggage you have, how many passengers there are, and the time of night or day
you are travelling. Condado is in Zone Two which has a base rate of $15.00. After
completing the Tourism Tax Voucher, the person will return the voucher and you will line
up for a short period before a driver asks to see the voucher and takes you to a Taxi and
off you go. The Taxi Driver will give you back the Tourism Taxi Voucher as
it serves as your receipt.
Arriving in Condado
The apartment is about 5 miles from the airport, so the drive will take about 10 minutes.
Tell the Driver to drive past the Marriott Hotel as you are going to Condominium Stella
Maris. At the signal light turn right off Ashford Avenue to go (North) half a block down
Condado Avenue to the Beach. The apartment building is on the left hand side of
Condado Avenue at the beach, and has a light blue colored wall and gate. Vilma or her
associate, Tito, should be there waiting for you to let you in.
To Return to the Airport
You can arrange with a taxi at the Marriott Hotel to drive you to the Airport after checking
out, or Jorge (George) Ramos, the building maintenance man, may be willing to drive you.
We usually arrange to have Jorge to take us and we pay him $20 (No Receipt). Do
whatever you feel is most comfortable.
